Floods 1955 - 2006 (Sources)
Although flooding is common in the United States, the impacts of flooding are by no means consistent. Many years of small floods with little impact may be followed by a single large flood with a sizable loss. With this in mind, we are presenting flood loss data as the total value of all damages caused by flooding in each state for the years 1955-2006. The first column presents flood loss totals adjusted for inflation to $2006 U.S. Also, since placing greater assets in the way of a flood will cause greater losses, we have adjusted flood loss totals for yearly changes in wealth. The second column presents flood loss totals adjusted for inflation and wealth to $2006 U.S. Links to more information on adjustment methods, appropriate interpretation, and original data sources can be found on the Data & Methodology page. It should also be noted that there is no flood loss data for the years 1980-1982. Reliable data for these years do not exist due to a lack of funding for collecting flood loss data during this time period.
