WAS*IS
Summer WAS*IS #2
July 2006

Summer WAS*IS: An opportunity to be part of Weather and Society * Integrated Studies!!

Following on the successful first WAS*IS, we will be offering another WAS*IS contingent upon funding.  This single-session workshop will be held July 14-21, 2006, in Boulder, Colorado. We are looking for bright, enthusiastic, innovative people who feel strongly about the need to bring together researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders to forge new relationships and to learn new tools for more effective socio-economic applications and evaluations of weather products, but who might not know how to do that, where to begin, or other people with similar interests.

For more information about the WAS*IS workshops, we encourage you to read about the Original Boulder WAS*IS workshop , held in November 2005 and March 2006, including the November session agenda and summary.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Fifteen to twenty people who want to learn about and embrace the culture change at the weather/society interface will be selected to participate in the Summer WAS*IS. We will select a diverse and interactive group that represents a range of experiences, educational environments, career aspirations, and specialties.

Graduate students, scientists, agency personnel, practitioners, professors, and others are encouraged to apply. Please note that, because of funding limitations, only people living within the United States will be accepted for this *WAS*IS workshop. Applicants must have completed a minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree in:

  • atmospheric science
  • anthropology
  • communication
  • economics
  • emergency management
  • engineering
  • environmental science
  • geography
  • hydrology
  • psychology
  • public administration
  • public health
  • other related field

*If you do not live in the United States , but you are interested in participating in WAS*IS, please send an email to Eve Gruntfest or Julie Demuth; your interest may help us garner support to hold an international WAS*IS.

Costs

Transportation, lodging, and food costs will be covered for those selected to participate in the WAS*IS workshops EXCEPT for federal employees** . This includes travel to and from both the workshop in Boulder , Colorado , the operational costs of the workshop, and room, board, and workshop materials.

**Unfortunately, because the funding for our workshop comes from federal sources, we are not legally allowed to reimburse federal participants for transportation, lodging, and food costs. Therefore, all federal employees who apply and are accepted into the workshop will be responsible for covering these costs.
