Abstract: Two years after the well attended First THORPEX International Science Symposium in held in Montreal, Canada, the international weather research and forecasting community reconvenes in the centre of Europe. This focussed single session conference runs under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). THORPEX is 'A World Weather Research Programme accelerating improvements in the accuracy of one day to two week high-impact weather forecasts for the benefit of society, the economy and the environment'.

Session Description:
In this first decade of the 21st century, we face both opportunities fueled by scientific advance and a range of challenges. As the century progresses, societies will grapple with the implications and possible transformations implied by bio- and nanotechnology, urbanization, increased resource demands, natural disasters, climate change, and the like. Societal needs for usable information on these issues are complex, requiring approaches that are not only multi-disciplinary, but also integrate the pursuit of scientific knowledge with societal goals.
Learning to conduct research within this new paradigm is one of the next major scientific frontiers — and a critical component of informing near-term environmental and policy decision-making as well as the long-term design of a more sustainable and resilient society. Often, the potential societal benefits of scientific research are not realized, due to gaps between research and societal needs for decision-making. Over the last few decades, researchers have begun to experiment with new approaches to creating more usable scientific information, providing insights toward how integrating research practice with societal goals might work in practice. In this session we will explore the challenges, opportunities and trade-offs of a new paradigm for research and science education that more effectively creates usable science. Further, we hope to draw out varying approaches to this same task: the production of usable science. We welcome submissions discussing general issues in this area, as well as those discussing specific examples of relevant efforts in areas such as climate change, carbon cycle science, hydrometeorological prediction, natural hazards, management of water and other natural resources, use of scientific information in decision-making, communication of uncertainty, and the science-policy interface.
