Joseph Bartosik
Summer2008 WAS*IS

I joined WeatherBug in February 2005 and in 2006 was promoted to Senior Meteorologist focusing on weather forecasts for utility and energy companies throughout the US and Canada. I work very closely with WeatherBug Professional energy clients by providing energy-focused detailed forecasts, as well as alerting clients to tropical activity and other severe weather that may impact their area of concern. I also communicate WeatherBug forecasts through radio, video, graphics, podcasts, weather briefings, and content writing.

I graduated in May, 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Millersville University of Pennsylvania, near Lancaster. Prior to joining WeatherBug, I started my meteorological career in the broadcasting industry, which allowed me to forecast and research a variety of weather events while working in Lancaster, PA, Abilene, TX, and Syracuse, NY. In June 2001, I earned the AMS Seal of Approval. I currently serve as Treasurer of the DC Chapter of the American Meteorological Society.

As a former TV broadcast meteorologist for 6 years, I’ve learned that the weather forecast has much more of an impact than whether someone brings an umbrella with them to work. There are times that a forecast communicated over the airwaves can be a matter of life and death. My recent experiences within the energy sector, however, has shown me how important it is to communicate risk, probabilities, and confidence to clients whose decisions could costs their companies hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I believe that my various experiences within the field of meteorology would greatly add to the discussions that take place during the WAS*IS workshop. I also feel that this would be a great opportunity for me to learn how to become a better communicator to the various clients I serve within society at large.
