The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Societal Impacts Program (SIP) is happy to announce that it will host a 2008 Summer WAS*IS workshop, contingent upon funding, Aug. 7-15, 2008, in Boulder, Colorado. Due to potential funding limitations, participants may be asked to cover some of their own costs. The workshop will begin with an evening reception at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 7 and adjourn at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15. Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Approximately 25 people will be selected to participate in the 2008 Summer WAS*IS. We will select a diverse and interactive group that represents a range of experiences, educational environments, career aspirations, and specialties.
Graduate students, scientists, agency personnel, practitioners, professors, and others are encouraged to apply. Please note that, because of funding limitations, only people living within the United States will be accepted for this WAS*IS workshop.
Applicants must have completed a minimum of an undergraduate degree (or have commensurate experience) in anthropology, communication, economics, emergency management, environmental science, geography, hydrology, meteorology, psychology, public administration, public health, sociology, or another related field.
Application Requirements
• All candidates MUST be able to attend the ENTIRE workshop, including group dinners on several evenings during the workshop.
• If selected, participants must be willing to read materials made available and contribute to email discussions prior to the workshop.
Costs
Traditionally, we have covered transportation, lodging, and food costs for those selected to participate in the WAS*IS workshops, EXCEPT for federal employees**. These costs included travel to and from the workshop in Boulder, the operational costs of the workshop, and room, board, and workshop materials. It is important to note that if selected to attend the 2008 Summer WAS*IS workshop, you may be asked to cover some of your own costs.
**Because the funding for our workshop comes from federal sources, we are not legally allowed to reimburse federal participants for transportation, lodging, and food costs. Therefore, all federal employees who apply and are accepted into the workshop will have to cover their own costs. We suggest that you check with your supervisor before apply to ensure that your participation would be supports.
Apply
There is a two-part process to apply for the 2008 Summer WAS*IS workshop.
- First, fill out the online application form
- Then, submit the following materials via email as either a Microsoft Word document or a PDF to Julie Demuth (jdemuth@ucar.edu) by Friday, March 28, 2008. Participants will be notified of their selection status by Friday, April 25, 2008.
- A résumé (2 pages maximum) detailing your relevant educational, professional, volunteer, and travel experiences;
- An interest statement (1 page maximum) that includes an explanation of your interests in integrating social science and meteorology; and
- Arrange for one letter of recommendation to be sent via email to Julie Demuth (jdemuth@ucar.edu) by your employer, professor, or superior that explains your suitability for participating in the WAS*IS workshop.
